Winter Design Trends

Now that the holidays are behind us we find ourselves at home more during the colder winter months. That means more time to edit and refine our sense of style. It’s a perfect time to try on a new winter look. Here are some helpful tips for transforming your space into a wintery wonderland, but no matter what winter decorating trend you pick, remember to slow down and enjoy your space for all it has to offer.

Winter Whites

Pure white, cream, ivory and snow are just a few of the many shades of the beautiful color white. The key to working with shades of white is to think about the undertone of the color. Some whites are cool while others are warm. Cooler whites that have gray undertones have a traditional winter feel, but shades that have brown or yellow undertones have a beautiful and wintry way of illuminating spaces as well.

Try sticking to a theme with the undertone and allow the shades to blend together while mixing textures. A monochromatic base of pure white bedspreads and sheets can be dressed up with throw pillows in nubby wool, faux fur or linen in the undertone of your choice. Apply the same concept in the living room to a taupe colored or gray sofa or lounge chair.

Scandinavian Cabin

No winter cabin of your own? No problem. Bring Scandinavian cabin style to your home with accessories you already have and functional edits that take your space from messy to minimal. Scandinavian cabins and homes are minimalist and clean with just the essentials. The idea is to declutter but maximize what you have in a cozy, light and airy way.

Store games and cookbooks you use regularly on bookshelves decoratively and get rid of other clutter. Layer comfortable throw blankets and pillows on furniture you already lounge on. Store cocktail bar items or tea and coffee essentials in a functional furniture piece like a cart or storage cabinet. Style these areas to feel comforting and accessible. Embrace the Hygge way by infusing your lounge area with candles. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, move comfy furniture or floor pillows close by and keep matches, lighters and fire making essentials nearby so you can conveniently enjoy all the space has to offer.

Indoor Plants

Ask any interior designer and they’ll tell you that indoor plants are one of the simplest and most powerful ways to transform a space—and these days, you can source plants everywhere. From the grocery store or home improvement store, to online vendors, you don’t have to look far to find these home essentials. Succulents, cactus and fiddle leaf figs have been trending the last several years but don’t forget about classics and easy-to-care for varieties like ferns, aloe, rubber plants, money trees, Queen Pothos and snake plants. Indoor plants add color, texture, height and some studies show that they improve indoor air quality.
