Sneak Preview: Kelly Hoppen’S New Design Book

Kelly Hoppen, founder of Kelly Hoppen Interiors in London, England, is known for creating glamorous spaces from private jets and super-yachts to private residences in China and luxe resorts in Mauritius. On August 3rd, the acclaimed South African-born designer and author of nine design books, will launch her latest 200-page title, Essential Style Solutions for Every Home. “This is a completely new format for me, it’s smaller compared to my hardcover books,” says Hoppen. “This book can be used as a notebook so it’s easy for readers to carry it around and use while choosing designs for the home. It includes an easy index for literally everything you need.”

Throughout the soon-to-be-released book, Hoppen provides her expertise with down-to-earth and approachable design insight on playing with contrast, displaying shelf art, adding balance and harmony, and facilitating flow and functionality. “I share my top tips and tried-and-tested design techniques to help the readers make their ideas come to life and create the home they’ve only dared to dream about,” says Hoppen. “I am going through all the design stages covering color, texture, lighting, layering and final touches. There is a dedicated chapter for each room of the house and a very helpful index at the end as mentioned to help you navigate through the book.”

Whether looking to update an existing dining space, or creating a functional area for family dinners, Hoppen reveals her pro design advice for creating the ultimate dining room with SHLTR here.

Hoppen’s Essential Dining Room Tips:

Create A Natural Flow

There should be a natural sense of flow throughout, which can be achieved by designing using a grid system.

Consider Location

Think carefully about where you position a dedicated dining room. It needs to be within easy reach of the kitchen so that you don’t spend all evening traipsing up and down stairs [or along corridors] with dishes of food that are getting cold.

Choose Materials Wisely

Glamorous finishes, such as shiny lacquer, polished plaster, marble, mirror, gold leaf, crystal and silverware, will all reflect the light and give the room a feeling of opulence. (They’ll also look magical by candlelight and contribute to the overall ambience.)

Ponder Table Shape

Round tables are conducive for intimate gatherings, while rectangular tables work well for larger parties and make it easy to work with the grid. Don’t just buy the largest table that will fit in the space. If you won’t be seating twelve for dinner on a regular basis, those empty chairs will dampen the vibe. If you want your guests to relax and linger a while, choose chairs that are comfortable and supportive.
