International Women’S Day: Meet Female Designers Making the World More Beautiful

Whether it’s architecture, interior design or art, female designers are making the world more beautiful one project at a time.Let us introduce you to three designers and their inspiration for why they do what they do.

Anna Davidson

Anna Davidson is the founder and lead designer for Homzie Designs, a virtual interior design service. Homzie Designs leverages technology and the human touch to create home environments that restore and inspire.

What does it mean to be a female designer today?

I think women have the unique ability to see beauty even in the common things, the mundane, and the simple. In building the client experience for our virtual design service, I always have my eyes on ways we can make the “simple” beautiful. Creating moments of joy and delight for clients where they didn’t expect it!

Where do you find your inspiration to design?

We’re in such a unique time in our industry that we have the opportunity to see, thanks largely to social media, what is inspiring designers from across the globe. The fast-paced changes to styles, aesthetics, and materials keep me on my toes and pushing the boundaries.

What’s your favorite thing to do at home?

I love hosting people in my home. Whether that be for a simple girls’ night or to watch the big game, creating memories and opportunities for those I love to connect simply by opening the doors to my home always brings me joy.

Meredith Steele

Denver based mixed media artist Meredith Steele creates hand painted murals and custom artwork for residential and commercial clients.

What does it mean to be a female designer or artist today?

It means I get the opportunity to continue on the narrative of empowering and lifting women up through my work. It took me years to develop confidence as an artist and understand the value in my work. Now that I have, I’ve found that to be the most important foundation.

Where do you find your inspiration to design?

My inspiration comes from such a mixture of things, emotions and experiences. I think that is why my work is so varied. There are so many things that inspire me and that I find myself wanting to explore. Feeling inspired is one of my absolute favorite states of being.

What’s your favorite thing to do at home?

Cook, paint, garden and take baths.

Kaci Taylor

Architect Kaci Taylor is the founder of THE5WH, an architectural design firm with residential and commercial projects throughout the US. Kaci’s work is focused on healthy environments and quality design.

What does it mean to be a female designer or artist today?

Some people will argue that the need to emphasize the female aspect of a designer actually does more harm than good for female artists and designers, and in some circumstances I agree. However, the fact is that women, especially Black women like myself, are extremely under-represented, underestimated, and outright disrespected in conversations around architecture and design.Because of this, it is critical to highlight and celebrate marginalized artists and designers for being women, especially women who have an intersectional experience, but notjustbecause they hold those identities.

Our identities influence our approach and experience of our world, and is the lens in which we design through, either to shed light on, fix, or make sense of our own experiences. Exploring the depth, diversity, and nuances of those experiences through design is what makes for fulfilling conversations of, and experiences in, the built environment.

Where do you find your inspiration to design?

My focus on every project is to design inclusive and equitable spaces. What does that actually mean? It means being very intentional about who you are designing for. I find inspiration by identifying barriers to inclusion in spaces that are commonly designed for only the white, cis, male demographic, and then designing to eliminate those barriers. The feeling of belonging is critical for your overall well-being, and I thrive on exploring ways that design can help promote feeling that way, in your city, in the spaces you visit, and even in your own home.

What’s your favorite thing to do at home?

Reading brings me constant joy, so when I am not working you can usually find me with my face in a book, or playing with my dog. A few recent reads that I loved are “A Little Devil In America“ by Hanif Abdurraqib, “Patriarchy Blues” by Frederic Joseph, and “Sea of Tranquility“ by Emily St John Mandel.
