Back to School Organization Tips

The kids are back to school and structure and organization are on the minds of parents everywhere. How do you get control of all the incoming papers, supplies and lunch boxes? You create zones! Check out the three easy steps below to get started.

Backpack Zone

Create an area in your space to store backpacks and lunchboxes. Add hooks and cubes, baskets or bins. Include your kids in the planning so they can personalize their areas. They’re more likely to comply with the rules of organization if they have a say in it!

Artwork and Craft Zone

Create a specific area where the arts and crafts can live, and create some rules for what and how long you will keep these items. Some families choose to create an actual art wall or shelf in the house where these items can be on display. Another option is to commit to one or two pieces for display and then take a picture of the rest. Use special apps to catalog the artwork and create a photo book of each child’s creations at the end of a school year.

Food/Snack Zone

Kids are hungry when they get home from school and having a designated place for them to grab a healthy snack is great for kids and parents. Designate a shelf in the refrigerator for snacks like cut vegetables, cheese, and fresh fruit. Make a space in a kitchen cabinet or a kitchen drawer for non-perishable healthy snacks like nuts, granola bars and jerky. To cut back on waste, make snacks in bulk and contain them in glass reusable containers.
