Adding Global Flavor to Home Design

If you’re a travel and design enthusiast then you probably already have infused your home with influences from around the world. There are so many global design trends to draw inspiration from, but here are a few fresh ideas from iconic regions that are so easy to adore.

1. Mexico

The next textile trend to watch? Otomi, the traditional embroidery technique hailing from the central Mexican Plateau. Created with a satin stitch over freehand drawings, the embroideries feature flora and native fauna such as birds, deer, and armadillos. Use the print on table linens, pillows and even bedding to give your home a whimsical, yet sophisticated feel.

2. Palm Springs

Are you looking for that clean-lined, sunny, warm and inviting retro-chic that Palm Springs oozes? Iconic Mid Mod is your answer. Look for a Slim Aarons print or a more contemporary piece from the Driftward collection. Go for a walnut sideboard and a Nelson bubble lamp. Don’t forget a palm plant or some leafy wallpaper, and take it outside too with wire frame furniture paired with pillows and poufs.

3. Morocco & the Middle East

Middle Eastern design is all about bright, bold and contrasting colors. Think exotic vibes from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, or the souk in Casablanca Morocco? Start with a neutral paint color or add a deep warm tone to one wall. Rugs, textures and textiles are everything. Ornate geometric arches and domes within tile, or even a doorway or screen. Add in brass lamps or candle holders that will project light patterns throughout the room.

4. Global

Do you have a collection of items that you’ve picked up throughout your worldwide travels and want to showcase them? Shelving can help tell the story. Start with a neutral background, add shelves and curate items together from specific places you’ve been. Add in a framed black and white photo of you when you traveled there and feel a sense of nostalgia everytime you walk by.
