Houseplants are welcome any time of year, but especially in the winter when it’s cold outside, everything looks dead, and you need a pop of color.
Forced Bulbs
Easy varieties like amaryllis and paperwhites scream wintertime beauty. They are easy to source and easy to force, unlike other bulbs that need to be stored in a chilled zone for several weeks prior to forcing. Look at your local nursery for these varieties and ask if they carry and pre-chilled varieties
Potted Herbs
You know those basil plants that sit in the produce section of the grocery store? Scoop one up, take it home and plop it in a cute ceramic pot in your kitchen windowsill.
Succulents
No one’s tired of these babies just yet! Succulents are here to stay with their trendy and modern vibe. They’re everywhere, from big box hardware stores to the grocery store. Plant a grouping of three mini succulents for a fun vignette on a cute side table. Or try your hand at a terrarium. Use a large glass vase and layer your succulents with rocks, pebbles and moss. Add decorative woodland creatures for a touch of whimsy.
Propagation Station
Propagation is all the rage. There are specific planters you can buy that hang on the wall or sit upright at the table. You can even craft your own propagation container. Either way, sourcing plant cuttings from friends and neighbors is the inexpensive and fun way to literally grow new life.
Cactus
Cactus needs no introduction. It’s just cool and looks good in any space. Every home needs at least at least one cactus plant. Not to mention, it requires little maintenance to keep it going strong.
