Depending on what part of the country you reside in, garden prep in February can look vastly different. But one thing is for sure, there are action steps you can take now to get your garden ready for later! Follow these tips.
Dream and Sketch
Want a climbing vine of snow peas on a trellis in the side yard? Dream it, sketch it and do it! You can’t have what you want until you visualize it, research it, and take the steps to put it into action. The dream and sketch phase is how you get there. While in this phase, take note of your property and how much space you need for adding a raised bed, a trellis or other outdoor garden element.
Get Supplies
Getting a jumpstart on supplies is smart so that when the weather is right, you can start digging, tilling and planting. Especially if you are building a bed or buying containers.
Start Seeds Indoors
In colder regions of the US, February is a good time to start planting cool season veggies indoors. Research your state’s cooperative extension service for help. This is the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) nationwide network of local experts in farming and agriculture. There you’ll find the difference between cool and warm season seed, the best conditions for planting indoors and how to transplant come outdoor planting time.
Clean Up Outdoors
Your outdoor space may need a little love before spring comes. Cleaning up leaves, dog poo and other messes left behind from normal seasonal transitions, will save you time when the weather is ready.
