To say that life has been stressful is the understatement of the last couple of years. Everyone is seeking a reprieve from the strain of today’s world and what better way than to carve out a special space in your home to relax, unwind and practice mindfulness. Here are a few ideas to create a space that is mellow and mindful.
1. Look for an underused area like an office, guest room or large closet in your home that doesn’t get much attention—or at least, has a large part of the room that could be allocated for meditation, rest, reading, connecting, thinking or drawing.
2. Add Color. Once you’ve decided to invest in your emotional health within your home and give yourself the space to do it, think about color. What makes you feel good? Maybe you want to sooth yourself with cool blues, or you want to feel creative with yellow and oranges. If you don’t want to commit to paint, give in to the multitude of low-commitment peel and stick wallpaper options.
3. Add Plants. Bringing the outdoors in always makes a space feel good. Plants clean the air, sometimes add fragrance, (think eucalyptus) and create a calming environment. If it’s low light, get a ZZ plant that can basically survive anything. Plants are a staple in any serene environment.
4. Add Inspiration. Assess what’s missing in your life. Do you need calm? Get a portable speaker that can play meditations or soothing music. Do you need to read and get off of technology? Create a library of your most inspiring and interesting topics. Do you need to connect cosmically? Add crystals, palo santo, and aromatherapy. 5. Add Texture. There is something psychological that happens when you pet an animal, touch a soft piece of velvet or even bumpy wool. Texture can be comforting, so add faux fur throws or fuzzy fleece pillows to your mindful space, and a comfy new piece of furniture that invites you to relax.
