Table Decorating Essentials

Don’t overlook your dinner table as an inexpensive and creative way to bring a new look into your space. These resourceful and easy-to-create themes will bring any meal to life.

Natural Table Decor

Naturalist style is here to stay and it couldn’t be easier to decorate a table the natural way. Pull out your beautiful crystals, collected shells or rocks and layer them alongside dried flowers, greenery from outside, or small votive candles. Anchor the table with a larger piece of driftwood or pile foraged pinecones on a raised platter or cake stand. Gather natural elements while out on a walk outside and don’t be afraid to forage and be creative. There’s no rule book when it comes to creating a natural tablescape.

Family-Style Decor

Celebrate the kids by elevating their homemade art at the dinner table. Think painted rocks, homemade place cards, handmade candles or stenciled linens. Throw down a roll of craft paper and have kids doodle or write their favorite quotes and notes of gratitude with fun pens and markers. Use the kids’ rubber stamps and ink and decorate plain white paper napkins with words and designs. Getting kids involved in the table decorating is a great way to make the meal even more special.

Antique Collectibles

Age adds comfort and warmth to any space so dig out the family heirlooms and treasures to create a tablescape that celebrates the past. Try metal teapots, grandma’s hand-me-down metal trays, heirloom silverware, crystal bowls and vintage linens. You can choose a metal and carry it throughout or settle on a hodgepodge of mixed metals or linen patterns. Use what you have or want to source at a bargain (think thrift store) and raise a glass to the saying “everything old is new again.”

Botanical Beauty

Flowers at the dinner table seem obvious, but they can add so much more panache when creatively crafted. Extend the bounty of one bouquet of grocery store florals by cutting single stems into multiple small bud vases. Do this monochromatically or mix small clusters of several multicolored varieties into mason jars. Don’t overlook beautiful ceramic bowls as a home for florals. Tape off the bowl in a grid to create sections for flowers with trimmed stems to stand upright. Don’t forget about dried flowers. They’ve made a beautiful comeback, are widely accessible at hobby stores, and are a sustainable option that can be used over and over.
