Lake Cove House by Stuart Silk Architects

This home is on the shores of Lake Washington on a tranquil, tree-lined site in the Washington Park neighborhood, and enjoys sweeping views of the lake and the Cascade Mountains. The neighborhood is established with many stately homes from the turn of the last century.

Stuart Silk clients share an appreciation of both traditional and contemporary architecture and wanted this new home to capture both. They merged these divergent sensibilities into something that is a distinctive expression and a unique reflection of each of them. They created a traditional feel with white painted wood siding and traditional gabled roofs. To create a fresh contemporary feel they stripped key details, such as eaves, to their bare essential and used modern materials including painted steel windows and zinc shingles. Tall two-story bay windows open up views and allow the inside and outside to merge.

On the interior, wide plank oak floors, beamed ceilings, and hand-plaster walls provide a warm yet minimal living environment. Textured steel is introduced at the front door and the stairwell completes the picture of a home that truly embraces both traditional and contemporary tastes.
