How to Tell a Story in Your Home: National Tell a Story Day

You know that feeling when you walk into someone’s home and you instantly feel the soul of the person? Creating a home that tells a story is personal. It’s also achievable with some vision and organization.

If you’re just setting up your interiors, start by defining the theme to your story, then gather the pieces. Don’t worry about a formula for this process. The goal is to identify aspects of your life and your design aesthetic that can marry together to create beauty, comfort and meaning.

Here are some ideas for themes to get your juices flowing.

Travel Stories

The places you’ve traveled are part of your home story. Gather items from your travels and think of creative ways to feature them in your home. Here are some examples: Make a map or a travel photograph into large format piece of artwork for an accent wall. Display pottery or ceramics you’ve collected on a bookcase or sideboard.

Hobbies and Career

Whatever it is you love to do for a hobby or for your career, show it off. If cooking is your jam, display your cookbooks throughout your home. Add artwork that is food or cooking themed throughout. Are you a scientist? Show off your microscope, research books or turn your lab beakers into a set of flower vases. There are subtle ways to infuse your likes into your décor without

Family Heirlooms

Probably the most obvious design suggestion is creating a story with family keepsakes. There’s no need to buy new, if mom and grandma saved boxes are overflowing with items that were passed down. Display family serving ware, photos or quilts mixed in with newer items. When sorting through items, pick the pieces that you cherish the most and use those in unique ways. Fill a clear hurricane vase with old black and white family photos or scan old photos and create fabric covers for throw pillows. Copy and enlarge any old handwritten notes or letters that carry meaning into artwork for your walls. In summary, don’t be afraid to try something that feels off the wall. Each of us have unique experiences that shape who we are and how we live.
