You don’t need to go to big box stores or Amazon to decorate for the holidays. Decor that is intentional, homemade, sustainable and affordable will always be on trend.

Minimalist Decor
Keep your décor simple and minimalist. Use fresh greenery. Snip it to put in vases, make a hanging swag, or create your own garland. Try sewing your own stockings out of an old sweater or leftover fabric from another project.

Homemade Wreath
A holiday wreath is a classic and festive decoration. Using simple items like foraged twigs, a grapevine wreath, or floral wire shaped into a circle, you can create anything. Spray with some white spray paint or faux snow treatment and it looks like winter. Another easy way to DIY a wreath is by using a cardboard cutout and a hot glue gun. Use tissue paper, old ornaments, candy canes, or pinecones and glue onto your cardboard to make a fun, one-of-a-kind wreath.

Paper Decorations
Brown lunch sacks, old wrapping paper, magazine clippings, or old cards can be used to make paper decorations. Remember making snowflakes as a kid? They’re beautiful when hung in groups from the ceiling or on a mantel. Just search online for paper crafts for the holidays and let your imagination run wild with ideas.

Small Christmas Tree
A big tree isn’t necessary for celebrating the holidays, especially if you dwell in a small space. Check your local hardware store or grocery store for small decorative pine or spruce trees that can pop into a pretty basket or clay pot.
Twinkle Lights
Inexpensive white LED lights look great during the holiday season. Wrap them around your front door, on the mantel, above an interior door frame, or down the handrail of a stairwell, and voilà—you’ve got holiday magic in a flash.

Homemade Advent Calendar
Parents, this one is for you. Kids go crazy over advent calendars and a DIY one can make a real statement. Use a large branch affixed to the wall to hang little paper bags filled with a treat and marked with the days counting down until Christmas. Get creative with supplies you have at home and dedicate a wall to create your own unique holiday decor.

Edible Decor
Those tasty holiday treats that come out of the kitchen can also be decorations. A handmade gingerbread house atop a cake pedestal would make a nice centerpiece. And don’t forget about dried slices of citrus. Use these colorful slices to make a garland for the mantle or tree, or decorate your gifts with them. Make a garland of dried orange slices to hang on the wall or around the tree.
