Framing How-to’S

Whether it’s treasured family photos or a painting that came home from a memorable trip, meaningful art deserves a place on your walls without a lot of fuss. Framing tends to be a stumbling block for most of us. These 5 framing how-tos will help you dust off those projects and get art on the wall in no time.

1. Look For a Deal

A lot of large craft stores consistently have framing sales. Wait for the 50% off weekend and you’ll save big bucks on this custom project. If you want to showcase your photos or art that are printed in common sizes, try picking an off-the-shelf frame and a pre-cut mat and do the job yourself. Pre-cut mats are inexpensive, sold in just about every color and found in big box craft stores and online.

2. Matting Is an Art

Pick colors that will accent the art that is being framed…but not overtake it. One approach is to choose a hue from one of the prominent colors in the piece. Monochromatic art or photos can really stand out with a mat in a complimentary tone, or take on a sublime vibe when matted in neutral colors.

3. Preservation Is Key

Often the reason we are framing things is to truly memorialize and preserve a special heirloom, photo or piece of art. Protect your treasured pieces in the long run by making sure the materials are acid free, and that you are using UV coated glass. Art hung in spaces that receive a lot of direct sun are vulnerable to fading.

4. Go Pro

If you’re afraid of making all the wrong decisions, hand your taks over to a professional. Visit your local frame shop and get an estimate from those most passionate about elevating your art. A plethora of online framing vendors have popped up in recent years that have virtual tools to make the process easy.

Although a well-curated wall of art all in the same color or matching frame style looks sufficient; it’s fun to add different frame widths, colors and textures for a more eclectic or artist look. Look at examples from your favorite design magazines and social media to draw inspiration and don’t be afraid to give it a try.
