4 Ways to Make Coastal Chic

Some might say the coastal design look is so 2000’s with its sailboats, anchors and nautical motifs. Designed well, the coastal look can be a calming and cool oasis inspired by the sea through shades of blue, textural rugs like jute and sisal, upholstered furnishings in white and neutral hues, and sophisticated artwork that feels curated as opposed to contrived. Think Diane Keaton’s home in Something’s Gotta Give—classic, timeless, effortless. Loved and lived in.

1. Nautical Stripes

A well placed striped rug (in the expected tonal navy/white) will set a proper mood. Nautical stripes can add a classic vibe on bedspreads, shower curtains and throw pillows. Add them intentionally and minimally for a clean and refined look.

2. Art with Story

No need to rely on the obvious like paintings of the sky, sea shells or sailboats, although chosen well, they will always look nice in a coastal home. The key is to pick pieces that have a story to tell. Large format photographs of modern beach umbrellas, bathing suits or surfboards will feel playful and imaginative.

3. Beautiful Books

It doesn’t matter if it’s coastal or desert, beautiful books always set a relaxed tone in interiors. Add some well curated coffee table books, or build out a library of your most cherished authors. Books will establish a thoughtful, educated and elevated atmosphere.

4. Antiques

Old hutches, collections of ginger jars, sea glass objects, and collected botanicals will give the space a more aged and bespoke vibe. Antiques can be left as found or spruced up in vibrant shades of aquamarine, muted blues or even creamy stone and moody gray that subtly conjure up the sand and the sea.
