Things to Consider When Hunting for Your Next Apartment

Searching for the right apartment takes time and energy, so setting yourself up for success is key to get the best outcome. Here are some things to consider as you embark on this task.

Budget

When apartment hunting, budget is the number one consideration. The rule of thumb is to spend no more than 30 percent of your income on rent. Make a basic spreadsheet or table and do the math to see what you can afford. Look for budgeting apps like Mint, Empower or Goodbudget

Neighborhood

This is probably the second most important thing to consider. The neighborhood you choose to live in can have a major impact on your quality of life. Not every desirable neighborhood is affordable, so you do have to make some tough choices regarding convenience, proximity to work, so on and so forth.

Must Haves

Do you need parking? A pool? Common entertaining area? A spot on the lower level? Make a list of the non-negotiables so you know what you can live with and without.

Noise

The noise in the building or the area is often an overlooked aspect of choosing the right apartment. If you’re sensitive to noise, especially when it’s time to sleep, don’t look at apartments in busy areas with a lot of outdoor noise. Pay attention while you are onsite, is there a noisy train nearby or a bar that’s open late?

Cell Phone Reception

Believe it or not, but some buildings, even newer structures have poor cell phone or internet reception and connectivity. Do a little research to see if there is any problem. Especially if you work remotely and you need a strong signal around the clock.
