The Dos and Don’Ts of Installing Wallpaper for the First Time

Wallpaper can be intimidating. But with so many varieties and tutorials galore, it’s not as hard as it looks. If you’re a wallpaper novice, these tips will help get your project off the ground without a lot of stress.

Do get the right tools. If you’re installing traditional wallpaper, you need a few items to do it right. If it’s peel and stick wallpaper, you need a little less.

  • Sponge for cleaning wall
  • Level
  • Tape measurer
  • Straight edge
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Smoother

If it’s traditional wallpaper with adhesive, watch a few videos before you start to apply the adhesive correctly.

Do understand the direction of your pattern.

Do allow yourself time with the project. Just like painting, doing ample prep work to make sure surfaces are clean, the area is clear for movement around the space, and tools are at the ready, will save you time in the long run

Don’t be shoddy. If you don’t smooth out your wallpaper or you line the seams up wrong, you’ll be unhappy with the finished product. Take a practice run on a wall or another surface to see how it feels.

Don’t order the wallpaper until you’ve measured the space and you know exactly what pattern you want.

Don’t add wallpaper to a space if you are on the fence about painting it a color instead. Wallpaper isn’t as hard as it looks, but most people have painted a room before and know what to expect. If you aren’t feeling ready, paint is always a great choice.Don’t wallpaper a rented space without the proper permission from the property owner.
