The 2022 Design Trends You Need to Know

A new year offers a fresh start for home decorating, and our trend spotters have their fingers on the pulse of what’s next for 2022! Spruce up your space with any of these color and design ideas.

Pantone Color of the Year: Very Peri

If purpleish tones are your jam, now is your time to shine. Pantone, the global color authority, introduced the color Very Peri as the Color of the Year selection for 2022. It’s a periwinkle blue hue with a violet red undertone that Pantone describes as “an empowering mix of newness”—and newness is just what the world needs after enduring pandemic life the last couple of years. Shades of purple and blue have been trending even before the Color of the Year was announced. Lean into shades of purple, including lavender, amethyst, violet or mauve, to create a moody or artistic vibe in your space. Purplish shades on the wall require a good dose of courage, but when done well, with complementary accent colors, purple hues truly transform a space.

Green/Biophilic Interiors

Another hot color for 2022 is green, which signifies nature and has a timeless feel. Biophilic interior trends, stemming from a love of nature, bring or extend the outdoors in. Green or biophilic moods can be incorporated in a number of ways. From sunrooms filled with plants and rattan furniture to a living space with a focal point like a velvety green sofa, these trends are easy to pull off. Got a furniture scheme that’s neutral? Invest in a few tall potted indoor plants to beckon the feel of trees. If your kitchen is filled with light, a cabinet refresh in a paint shade of calming sage green can be just the right amount of this color to feel nourished by nature.

Earthy or Natural Textures

Whether it’s mountain chic, desert/boho, or coastal vibes, earthy or natural textures are another timeless and beautiful trend for 2022. There are very practical ways to add earthy or natural textures to your space without huge investments.

Venetian and modern plaster treatments are back in a modern way and add a hefty dose of depth and texture to walls. True plaster treatments are good choices if you’re adding or revising walls as part of a whole room remodel, but DIY plaster looks are achievable with paint. There are a plethora of tutorials on this technique and a wide range of color schemes to match your vision. Whole room peel and stick wall murals with a plaster look are also available on sites like Etsy and Wayfair.Grasscloth and wood plank looks are other options for the earthy and textural look. Depending on your budget and skill level, you can go the easy route with temporary peel and stick varieties. Or for a more permanent look yet more labor intensive, you can install real wood planks right over drywall. If you’re not up for changing the look of walls, ground a large room in a natural texture with an oversized sisal or jute rug. Or dress up windows with bamboo blinds. There are so many accessories that are earthy and natural that can add beautiful texture to your home!
