Sustainability and Interior Design

Sustainability is gaining momentum in almost every area of our lives and for good reason. Taking care of mother earth is the right thing to do. Everyone can make choices in their interior spaces to reduce waste, reuse materials, increase energy efficiency and protect the environment, but how? If you want to get started, here are some things to think about.

Choose Sustainable Materials

Choosing new materials for your space is fun, but sometimes overwhelming. These days, the choices are unlimited. Look for materials that are made by companies who value sustainability and the environment. Consider the type of material you are choosing and if it is safe in your home.

Increase Energy Efficiency

There are a number of ways to make an energy efficient space. Start with low hanging fruit like choosing appliances with good energy ratings, ensuring doorways and windows are installed properly to keep heat in during the winter. Carefully consider window treatments and lighting. Purchase LED bulbs instead of conventional light bulbs.

Maximize Space

When designing a new space, look at ways to maximize space. The more space you have, the more power it takes to energize it. What’s more, smaller space living means you need less materials and products. It also means there is less to clean, organize and tend to. That way you can spend more time doing the things you really love.

Use Reclaimed or Salvaged Materials

Sourcing reclaimed or salvaged goods is a great way to decrease your carbon footprint. Scour antique stores, garage sales, consignment shops and thrift stores to find items you need. Not everything in your home has to be brand new.

Focus on Waste Reduction

Create and build systems in your home that make waste reduction a high priority. Add a compost area outside for food scraps. Find innovative ways to use items like old boxes and glass containers in other ways in your home. Cover old boxes in scrap fabric for storage containers and use old glass food containers as DIY candles.
