Newstalgia: the Trend for Everyone

Make way for the “Newstalgia” trend. It’s all about finding vintage or retro items that have character and meaning and blending it with a little modern luxury. Searching ‘modern retro decor’ on Pinterest will yield a number of Newstalgia trends. With so many old + new schemes, it might seem hard to pinpoint how Newstalgia is different from just eclectic. But the differentiator is the contrast of the meaningful retro items that find a special place amongst largely modern and new decor.

Kitchen

If you just moved into a new apartment or home with white walls, brand new gray cabinets and marble countertops, Newstalgia looks like vintage red Dansk enamelware atop your new stove. Or a collection of McCoy blue-green pottery displayed on white open shelving.

Living Room

Newstalgia in the living room looks like a hand-me-down Eames lounge chair and a consigned large arc floor lamp paired with a brand new linen cushioned sofa. The chair reminds you of  Uncle Charlie, but the brand new sofa is a welcome start to friend and family traditions in the making.

Dining Room

The dining room is one of the easiest spaces to get the Newstalgia look, since it’s usually just a few pieces of furniture. Think mismatched vintage and thrifted wooden chairs with a sleek new marble table. The chairs remind you of childhood meals, but the modern table is future forward.

Bedroom

Newstalgia in the bedroom is where your Aunt Nancy’s elaborate walnut headboard gets a modern and contrasty boost from a clean cotton white duvet cover and pillows. Add a colorful floral wallpaper and voila, you’ve married old with new perfectly.
