The ceiling really is the fifth wall, and you can make a big impact with minimal effort by painting it a bold color, or even using wallpaper. Keep the primary walls neutral and light, and choose a statement color for the ceiling.
1. Color
Adding color is all the rage these days when it comes to ceilings, especially in small spaces like bathrooms. Try running the color over the ceiling and the wainscotting, giving the space a unanimous mood. Then add in art minimally and texture through hardware and other decor. Color on the ceiling goes a long way so your decor can err on the minimal side. Use a flat matte paint when painting the ceiling for an even finish that hides imperfections.
2. Texture
One way to add dimension to a space is to add texture. Try beetle kill, knotty pine, or other natural looking ship-lap. Wood can look warm and rustic, or super modern depending on the color and treatment. Ceiling tiles in a variety of finishes are other options for adding texture and light reflection. Pressed tin, gold leaf and molding are also interesting ways to enhance the upper parts of your room’s atmosphere.
3. Wallpaper, Mural & Design
Last but not least is the big trend of adding imagery to your ceiling. Keeping the room walls relatively clean and simple allows you to really “high” light the ceiling as a focal point. If you want a more visually stimulating environment, use wallpaper on the vertical walls, and then have an artist take elements out of it and create a mural on the ceiling around a fixture.
