How to Find the Perfect Color Scheme for Your Home

You’ve graduated from white walls, posters and half-dead houseplants to an elevated sense of style, but now you’re wondering how to mix and match patterns and colors to achieve a cohesive look. Finding the perfect color scheme for your home can feel overwhelming, but if you simplify the process by selecting the mood for your space first, color combinations more easily reveal themselves. Here are three basic tips to get you started!

Moody

Deep hues can add depth and drama to a room. You can blend moody vibes across the whole house or just a single room. This can be achieved with darker shades of paint on a wall or walls, a built-in bookshelf or doors. Decide which spaces you want to have a moodier feel and anchor them with shades of deep indigo, charcoal, or midnight sky. Offset larger areas of moody color in the space with contrast like white bedding, creamy toned rugs or white lampshades. Blend other colors like emerald green, gold or plum in the form of throw pillows, blankets or armchairs. Don’t forget about metals and different shades of wood and their role in adding emotion to a room. If you’ve never experimented with moody schemes, start small and paint a single wall in a deep color and live with it for a while. The surprising effects of deep hues like peppercorn or graphite is a feeling of luxury, balance and warmth.

Calming

When choosing a calming scheme, most people think of bathrooms and bedrooms, but if your work life is chaotic and you crave calming vibes in every space, choose a monochromatic paint scheme from one paint swatch where varying hues of that swatch can extend from one room to the next. Blues, grays and greens are intrinsically calming, but modern muted shades of mauve, pink and purple or classic taupe, possess soothing qualities as well. Another option is to keep walls neutral in pure white and barely there gray and choose a range of muted colors for your furniture and accessories. Don’t forget how simple elements like cabinet hardware, and light fixtures in stainless steel and brushed nickel can carry a vibe of calmness through a room, too!

Rejuvenating

The word rejuvenate means “to give new energy or vigor to.” When choosing this color mood think of colors that energize you. They might be bright and bold or slightly toned-down versions of those colors. Start by pairing two or three colors you adore. A favorite throw pillow or blouse pattern is an inspiring place to start in deciding the colors you want woven throughout your space. Painting bold colors in every room is one option, but so is leaving walls white or neutral and infusing color through artwork, painted furniture and other room accessories. Don’t get hung up on the “color of the year” trends; pick colors that speak to you and make you feel alive and you can’t go wrong.
