Christmas Lights Done Right: Christmas Lights for Beginners

Holiday lights can be intimidating if you’ve never put them up before. With so many varieties of lighting options available, it’s hard to choose. What’s more, climbing up on a ladder and getting them to stay put takes effort and forethought. Here are a few tips to get your started.

Design Your Look

Before you go make a hasty purchase, take the time to determine what you want your look to be. Search your favorite virtual sources for looks and inspiration and decide what you can afford and realistically pull off ahead of the busy holiday season.

Intentional Purchases

Make sure and measure your spaces to get the right length or size of lights. Look for LED lights that are more eco-friendly than conventional lights. Consider what supplies you’ll need including plastic clips for the roof, light stakes, extension cords and grounded power stakes.

Take Precautions and Enlist Help

Putting lights up on the outside of your house, especially on rooflines is indeed risky, especially in low light and wet weather. Make sure you have the proper equipment to be up high safely. Grab your partner or friend and have them spot you on a ladder.

Always use grounded electrical outlets and don’t leave cords out where they will be a trip hazard. Tape them down with duct tape.

Enjoy Your Creations

In all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, don’t forget to truly enjoy the décor. Designate an evening to take in your holiday light design. Pour yourself a hot cup of cocoa or mulled wine and sit outside and revel in the holiday spirit.
