The summer solstice marks the first day of summer and the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Across the globe it is celebrated with varied traditions, often involving celebrating the sun and the summer harvest. Wiccan and pagan cultures participated in rituals like meditation, prayer and dancing during seasonal changes.
Here are some ways to make your party witchy and fun.
Bonfire or Candles
A bonfire was built for dancing and chanting in Wiccan culture, but you can light the firepit (depending on fire danger in your area) as a place to create ambience and to celebrate the power of the warmth of the sun. If it’s not safe to light up the firepit, set up an altar area with lots of candles. Make your altar a place to make an offering of to the sun and the change of season.
Affirmations and Blessings
As the summer season kicks off, it’s a great time to create affirmations for renewals or chapters of life that have closed. Set up an activity with writing prompts where your guests can write down their intentions and thoughts about the future. Ideas for writing prompts: Gratitude list, word or mantra for the season, accomplishments this year, unmet goals for the year or season, etc. Or leave it open ended and let people write whatever they want.
Herby Food and Drink
Herbs are bountiful this time of year and can take center stage in food and drink menus, and even as decor. Gather bunches of herb cuttings and drop in mason jars as centerpieces or set out bunches of cut herbs and flowers with wire and floral tape for making flower crowns.
Dancing and Movement
No summer solstice party would be complete without dancing and movement. Set a playlist of tunes that will get your guests moving, shaking or singing. Or ask a yogi friend or a dance instructor to lead a 10–20-minute routine at a set time during the party.
