10 Pieces That Are Worth Thrifting in Your Home

Thrifting used to be on the downlow, an activity reserved for the artists, the original gangsters of sustainability and maybe even your mom who was trying to save money on all your childhood clothes. But not today! Thrifting is cool and its benefits are many.

1. Baskets:
They line the shelves of thrift stores and come in every size and shape. Baskets are abundant and they are useful to the max. They can be cleaned, painted, and adorned with embroidery thread, pom poms or whatever your heart desires.

2. Textiles:
Don’t overlook textiles that are washable. Blankets, tablecloths, and pillow covers are waiting for you to find them in interesting patterns that deserve a new life.

3. Platters and Serveware:
Why buy new when hundreds of beautiful platters, bowls and serving pieces are just taking up space in thrift stores all over the country? Throw them in the dishwasher, pile on the cupcakes and charcuterie and have yourself a party.

4. Ceramic Planters:
Other items that are perfectly fine in used condition are planters. Whether they are ceramic, terracotta, or plastic, they can be made beautiful with some soap and water or paint artistry. Once you start noticing them at the thrift store, you won’t be able to stop seeing them!

5. Mason Jars:
These glass jars are perfect for so many uses including food storage, flower vases, and whatever you want to corral in a simple glass jar (buttons, art supplies and cotton balls).

6. Lamps:
There is high inventory of used lamps at thrift stores, from vintage to new and everything in between. Just make sure you try it out before you leave the store to know if you need to a lamp kit or if it’s good to plug in right at home.

7. Artwork:
Don’t overlook the artwork bin. There are paintings and prints galore. And unique frames if you don’t like the art inside.

8. Books:
When it comes to fiction at the thrift shop, you probably will never have to buy new again. Thrift stores are brimming with beautiful old and new books that make great conversation pieces on a coffee or side table.

9. Seasonal Décor:
What does everyone do when they’re tired of their seasonal decorations? They donate them to the thrift store. Start here for sustainable décor for pennies before you head out to the hobby store. Whether its spring, summer, autumn and winter, there’s a wreath, a garland, a dried floral bouquet for everyone.

10. Sturdy Wood Furniture:
There are so many pieces of wood furniture just hanging around the thrift store’s furniture area. Look for pieces that have good bones and sturdy moving parts. You can clean up, refinish, or paint any piece without breaking the bank!
